The students, from all over Cambodia, reside and study at the Centre of the Dove for one year. They live in self-help houses, supported and counseled by former graduates, who are now members of the Centre of the Dove training team.
After studying the Centre's basic techniques course including literacy, students can elect to study subjects from a wide range of activities including:
| Carpentry | Farming |
| Sculpture | Weaving |
| Welding | Literacy (on-going) |
| Electronics | Small business |
| Tailoring | Motor repair |
We strive to offer students a diverse range of extra curricular activities as part of our program. Some of these activities include agriculture, small business, health and human rights. There's also the opportunity to participate in dancing, outings and Ban Mine Campaigns too.
The students also enjoy other activities together such as sport, library, home gardens, videos, drawing and singing. Sports such as volleyball, boules, table tennis, athletics, badminton, wheelchair events and basketball are available to the students.
House advisors meet regularly with the students to try to make Banteay Prieb a place where hearts, minds and skills can expand.
A number of additional courses on 'Skills for living' are also offered to help the students before they go back to their village/society.
As well as helping students to learn a skill that may provide part time or full time income generating possibilities, the Centre has as its major goal the development of the student's self esteem, confidence, focusing on abilities rather than disability. Pastoral care of the students is thus provided.
A production shop staffed by disabled graduates makes wooden and welded furniture for schools, hospitals and homes. Sculpture graduates and second year trainees are able to sell their work and woven cloth is sold as kromas or shirts.
Accompaniment of the families of the students is also an important
part of the program. Very vulnerable families, in the past, have been helped
with housing, emergency food and health assistance.
